Summer of Code and Joomla 1.6 time again
UPDATE 3/19: Joomla was not chosen as a project for the 2010 GSOC program. Read the news from Joomla.org.
It's amazing to think it's almost time for another Summer of Code, Google's annual festival of Free and Open Source (FOSS) student software projects.
Joomla has benefited enormously from the GSOC projects over the past five summers. Last fall we reported on a number of innovative features developed for Joomla 1.6 by GSOC students, including advanced front-end editing, multi-site management, and an improved administrator UI template for the Joomla backend. Time will tell if their code makes it into the Joomla 1.6 beta release expected soon.
For GSOC students to work with the Joomla Project, they must have an approved project and mentor. Last year, Joomlashack's own TJ Baker volunteered as a mentor, an experience he says he greatly enjoyed. "Mentoring a GSOC student is an excellent way to give back to Joomla, and to learn from your mentee too!"
Interested in becoming a mentor or a student in the Google Summer of Code this summer? Applications are due by March 12th and you can find all the details on the Joomla Community blog.

Tips to Increase link popularity
There are 1 replies, with the last one on 04/16/2010 at 09:37:33 AM by searchblissQuote:quote:Originally posted by nevinHi,There are various ways of increasing your web site link popularity. I'm sharing some important tips which are easily doable :1. Submit your site in popular search engines manually. Don't go for automated submission.2. Get your site listed in open directory projects like dmog.org, yahoo.com. Getting listed in these directories will give your site a boost in link popularity and improve search engine ranking in other search engines.3. Provide high quality content - people will naturally link to your site if you have what they want and no where is available.4· Your personal relations with other webmasters and put your site link on their sites. One way links often count for more than reciprocal links.5. Participate in link exchange strategies. Find top 20 sites doing the same business and contact them for reciprocal links. Link exchange between unrelated sites might affect the ranking of websites in the Search Engine.6· If you are subscribed in a forum and forum does not have any restriction to keep your site link as your signature then it can help you to increase your site popularity.7· Submit your site to bookmark sites like Digg,StumbleUpon,Technocrati and Slashdot etc. Before submitting please go through their spam policy.8· Write good articles in blog sites and give few references of your links with in that article.9· Keep providing good content to your site visitors. Try to keep them busy on your site. If possible create forums, news letters, blogs etc.10· Buy a place on high rank website where you can put your link.11· Subscribe for Google adwords program to drive traffic towards your website.#1 is wrong, there is no reason to submit a site to search engines. Submit a sitemap in Google webmaster tools, and get backlinks on sites that are indexed regularly. Search submission is dead.#5 Is useless. SE's are smarter then ever, and link swaps are discounted.

New Google Places Announced
Today the Local Business Center is becoming Google Places. Why? Millions of people use Google every day to find places in the real world, and we want to better connect Place Pages — the way that businesses are being found today — with the tool that enables business owners to manage their presence on Google.Google launched Place Pages last September for more than 50 million places around the world to help people make more informed decisions about where to go, from restaurants and hotels to dry cleaners and bike shops, as well as non-business places like museums, schools and parks. Place Pages connect people to information from the best sources across the web, displaying photos, reviews and essential facts, as well as real-time updates and offers from business owners.Source: GoogleBlog
